Wireless Portable Monitor Solution

Portable monitors serve as a second screen for laptops or an external screen for consoles and cameras, but an HDMI or Type-C cable ties the screen to the source. Moving it or sharing it around a table is awkward. Here the RX module is built into the portable monitor and the TX becomes a transmitter on the source, so the picture reaches the screen wirelessly.

PAIN POINTS

Pain Points

01

Cable length decides placement

The cable that comes with a portable monitor is usually a metre or two, so the screen stays next to the source. Turning it toward someone across the table or moving it to another desk means a longer cable or moving the host.

02

Passing the screen around

During a demo or a group discussion the screen gets passed from person to person, dragging the host along by its cable. The connectors take repeated strain and eventually get loose.

03

A different cable for every source

Laptops mostly use USB-C, while consoles and cameras use HDMI. One portable monitor needs several cables, one is easy to forget, and without it the screen is useless.

04

Touch needs another USB cable

A touch-enabled portable monitor needs a separate USB cable back to the host on top of the video cable. With two cables on the desk, plugging into the wrong port or forgetting the USB leaves a picture that doesn't respond to touch.

RX module inside the monitor

The 22 x 45 mm RX module plugs into a carrier board inside the monitor through its 80-pin edge connector, and its HDMI output feeds the panel driver. There is no external receiver box.

Transmitters for common ports

The TX becomes a transmitter: an HDMI version for consoles and cameras, and a USB-C version for laptops with a DP Alt Mode to HDMI converter on the carrier board. TX and RX ship pre-paired and link automatically at power-up.

Touch over the same link

Connect the monitor's touch panel to the RX over USB. Touch data travels back over the link and the host sees a local USB touch device, with no driver. Neither video nor touch needs a cable.

EDID pass-through and audio

The RX reads the portable monitor's real EDID and passes it to the source, avoiding black screens and forced resolution drops. Embedded HDMI audio stays in sync, and the RX analog audio output switches to headphones automatically when they are plugged in.

SELECTION

Selection & Design Notes

  1. Choose by panel resolution: 4K60 (ATE9460/9461) or 4K30 (ATE9430T/R) for 4K panels. Both models also work with 1080p panels.
  2. On 4K30, TX and RX share a pinout, so the transmitter and the monitor can use one carrier board design. On 4K60 they need separate designs.
  3. Antennas: the D40 and D80 tiers use one antenna, the RTL8812CU tier uses two. Plan the antenna positions into the monitor housing early.
  4. Whether powered by battery or USB-C, the module's VBUS must stay within 3.7-5.1 V. Above 5.1 V damages the module.
  5. The range tier does not affect resolution. Pick from the three wireless tiers by working distance: roughly 30-100 m, 100-300 m or 300-1000 m.
FAQ

FAQ

Q1Can the monitor's touch work wirelessly?
Yes. The touch panel connects over USB to the RX inside the monitor. Touch data is sent back over the link, and the host recognizes a local USB touch device with no driver.
Q2Will the module fit inside a portable monitor?
The module is 22 x 45 mm with an 80-pin edge connector and plugs into a carrier board inside the monitor. Whether it fits depends on the housing and antenna space. Use the ATE946X-KIT evaluation kit and our 2D/3D models to check the mechanical design.
Q3Can headphones plug into the monitor?
Yes. Embedded HDMI audio reaches the RX in sync with the picture. The RX has an analog audio output (DAC), so add a headphone jack to the monitor; plugging in headphones switches the output automatically.
Q4Can you build the wireless portable monitor as OEM / PCBA?
Yes. We design the boards to your form factor, interfaces and range, handle ODM development and PCBA production, and offer white-label OEM; or buy the modules and design the carrier yourself. Validate link, range and picture with the ATE946X-KIT before prototyping.
