AIC8800-D40, D80 or RTL8812CU: Choosing Range and Antennas for a Wireless Video Link

The three Wi-Fi modules only set range and antenna count; resolution is unaffected and every tier runs 4K60. D40 covers about 30 – 100 m and D80 about 100 – 300 m, both single-antenna. RTL8812CU covers about 300 – 1000 m with two antennas, so the carrier needs two antenna positions. Carrier and firmware are shared across all three.

Key differences

Range does not affect resolution

A setup has two parts: the video module sets resolution (4K30 or 4K60), and the Wi-Fi module sets range. The long-range tier does not force a drop to 1080p, and a short link does not need a costlier module for better picture. Deciding the two separately avoids most selection mistakes.

RTL8812CU needs two antennas

D40 and D80 are single-antenna 1T1R, so one antenna position is enough. RTL8812CU is dual-antenna 2T2R, and both the carrier and the enclosure need room and routing for two antennas. Switching to 8812CU on a single-antenna carrier means revising the board and the mechanics. If distance is still open, reserve two positions from the start.

Rated distances assume line of sight

All three distances are line-of-sight references. Real range depends on antenna placement, obstructions and co-channel interference; concrete walls, lift shafts and metal shelving all cut it down. Testing an ATE946X-KIT at the real site before production is more reliable than reading the table.

Changing tiers needs no firmware change

Carrier and firmware are shared across the three tiers, so changing the Wi-Fi module changes the range. One product can ship in short, mid and long-range versions as long as the carrier reserves up to two antennas.

Which one to pick

If the source and screen are in the same or the next room, such as meeting-room casting or rear-seat displays

AIC8800-D40, 30 – 100 m

If the link crosses rooms or floors, such as presentation, KVM or digital signage

AIC8800-D80, 100 – 300 m

If the use is outdoor or mobile over long distances: drones, inspection vehicles, stages

RTL8812CU, 300 – 1000 m, with two antenna positions on the carrier

FAQ

Q1Which module do I need for a 1 km wireless video link?
RTL8812CU, rated 300 – 1000 m line of sight with dual 2T2R antennas; the carrier needs two antenna positions. Real range depends on obstructions and interference, so test samples on site first.
Q2Can the long-range Wi-Fi module carry 4K60?
Yes. Resolution is set by the video module; all three Wi-Fi tiers run 4K60 with ATE9460 / ATE9461.
Q3Can the evaluation kit be ordered with a specific range tier?
Yes. The ATE946X-KIT can be ordered with D40, D80 or 8812CU and uses external SMA antennas.
